Microsoft's cumulative investment in OpenAI has reportedly swelled to $13 billion and the startup's valuation has hit roughly $29 billion. What does that mean for Microsoft's investment and broader arrangement? The structure changed in 2019, when two top executives published a blog post announcing the formation of a "capped-profit" entity called OpenAI LP. Microsoft has an exclusive license on GPT-4 and all other OpenAI models, the OpenAI spokesperson said. When considering potential exits for OpenAI, Microsoft — which does not hold an OpenAI board seat — would be the natural acquirer given its close entanglement.

"It's a new day in search," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Tuesday during an AI event held at the company's headquarters, saying that the "race starts today." So far, Microsoft is making significant headway within AI and rising in popularity in the tech world. Alphabet, he added, "got beaten to market by Microsoft" despite its investments in the space. Alphabet Microsoft may be taking the lead on AI in the near term, but investors shouldn't sleep on Alphabet just yet. "We believe GOOGL has the AI tech and scale to maintain/grow its leading user base," said Morgan Stanley's Brian Nowak in a Thursday note.
But analysts aren't convinced that significant market share gains will come anytime soon. At the same time, he suspects the announcement will further push Google to roll out more of its own AI search engine features. To be sure, even though Microsoft accounts for just a fraction of the search advertising market, analysts see signs that the company is making significant progress. According to Piper Sandler's Brent Bracelin, Microsoft AI should reach $40 billion in revenue in half the time it took the company's cloud segment to reach that milestone. He also estimates that Microsoft could expand its market share within the digital ad market by as much as 7% sometime in 2026.
"This is the first real test we've had in a while for big tech stocks," said Adam Sarhan, CEO of 50 Park Investments. Tech companies have already demonstrated that they are bracing for slower growth with a string of recent cost-cutting announcements and layoffs that have left few stalwarts untouched. Sarhan expects most technology companies to surpass expectations, in part because estimates have come so much. Some analysts remain optimistic heading into earnings season, viewing this period as a potential reset for dismal expectations. Companies often use this earnings season as an opportunity to guide for the year ahead.

Analyst Michael Turrin downgraded the stock to equal weight from overweight, saying investors should sit on the sidelines as Adobe's $20 billion purchase of Figma raises questions. "Following a string of disappointing earnings results, Adobe shocked the software world announcing its intent to acquire Figma for ~$20Bn (1/2 cash, 1/2 stock)," Turrin wrote. The firm's new price target of $310, down from $425, represents just 3.5% upside for Adobe.
